BOSTON, Massachusetts - The Boston Marathon will accept an extra 9000 runners for next year's race, making room for the more than 5000 people stopped on the course this year when two bombs went off. Registration for the 118th edition of the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon will open on September 9.

ZURICH, Switzerland - FIFA has imposed global bans on footballers and referees from Armenia, Lebanon, Estonia and Tunisia who are implicated in match-fixing cases. FIFA said Thursday it extended life bans for two Armenian match officials on FIFA's international list, referee Andranik Arsenyan and assistant Hovhannes Avagyan. They admitted to trying to fix a Europa League match in July for a betting scam.
JOHANNESBURG - Argentina forward Leonardo Senatore was handed a nine-week ban on Thursday for biting South African lock Eben Etzebeth on the arm, a SANZAR statement said. The incident occurred midway through the second half of a Rugby Championship Test last Saturday, which the Springboks won 22-17 in Mendoza.
MONTE CARLO - Bayern Munich's French winger Franck Ribery on Thursday won the award for European player of the 2012/13 season. The France international becomes the third player to win the award, the two previous winners being Barcelona duo Lionel Messi (2011) and Andres Iniesta (2012).
HARARE - A commanding century by Mohammad Hafeez and a four-wicket haul from left-arm seamer Junaid Khan led Pakistan to a series-levelling victory over Zimbabwe in the second one-day international on Thursday. After Hafeez had carried Pakistan to an imposing 4-299 with an unbeaten 136, Junaid stubbed out a promising run chase by the Zimbabweans to secure a 90-run win and set up a series decider on Saturday.
LONDON - French midfielder Mathieu Flamini has returned to Arsenal after being released by AC Milan, the Premier League club announced on Thursday. The 29-year-old central midfielder made 153 appearances for Arsenal between 2004 and 2008 before leaving for Milan, where he spent five seasons.

SYDNEY - North Queensland veteran Matt Bowen has announced he will retire from the NRL at the end of the 2013 season. The 31-year-old's future in rugby league had been in doubt, with persistent knee problems plaguing his 13th season with the Cowboys.
