Chelsea deal on
LONDON - Brazil attacking midfielder Willian Borges da Silva formally joined Chelsea from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala on Wednesday after the two clubs reached an agreement. The 25-year-old had been set to join Tottenham Hotspur, having undergone a medical at the north London club earlier this week, only for capital rivals Chelsea to hijack the deal. Chelsea will pay a fee of around STG30 million ($F88.80m).
BARCELONA - Barcelona won the Spanish soccer Super Cup on Wednesday despite being held to a 0-0 draw at home by 10-man Atletico Madrid, claiming the trophy on away goals following a 1-1 opening leg. Lionel Messi had a chance to secure the win for Barcelona in the 89th minute but fired his penalty kick off the crossbar. Neymar da Silva Santos made his first starting appearance for his new club.

LONDON - Seven-time champions AC Milan avoided another early-season hiccup by reaching the group stage of soccer's Champions League with a 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven. After a 1-1 draw in a tense first leg in the Netherlands, Kevin-Prince Boateng scored twice and Mario Balotelli added another to ensure Milan won the playoff 4-1 on aggregate. Celtic beat Shakhter 3-0 to overcome a 2-0 loss in the first leg.
LONDON - Promising Australian defender Curtis Good made his first team debut for top-flight English club Newcastle United in the League Cup on Wednesday. Former Melbourne Heart player Good earned his first call-up under Alan Pardew and played a full match in Newcastle's 2-0 win over Morecambe. Brothers Shola and Sammy Ameobi left it late to score the goals.
LONDON - England's cricketers have issued an apology for any offence caused during their celebrations of their Ashes series win over Australia at the Oval on Sunday. The statement, released on the England and Wales Cricket Board's website, followed allegations that England players urinated on the pitch hours after the series had ended on Sunday night in a 3-0 win for the home side.
