A 25-YEAR-old man convicted of assaulting and stabbing his de facto partner with a pair of scissors was yesterday sentenced to three years in jail.
On January 8 last year, Semi Waqaiwai punched his 21-year-old partner before hitting her with a stick at their Wainibuku home in Nausori.
The following day he stabbed his partner again with a pair of scissors and broke a mirror on her after accusing her of having an affair.
The court heard the woman was having a conversation with her sister-in-law when Waqawai called her into their bedroom and began to verbally abuse her.
He then grabbed a scissors and stabbed her fingers, arms and thighs.
The court also heard that he grabbed a mirror and smashed it on her face.
"This sentence is to serve as a warning to males who are violent to their wives and or de facto wives," Justice Salesi Temo said in passing sentence.
"A prison sentence awaits you if you resolve your marital disputes violently.
"A suspended sentence is not appropriate in these type of cases."
Waqawai was charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and three counts of act with intent to cause grievous harm.
