A NEW ice plant worth $150,000 was opened at Lawaqa in Sigatoka yesterday.
Sigatoka agricultural officer Allen Takali said the plant would be more viable than its predecessor.
"Our old ice plant was damaged in last year's floods including the electrical machines," he said.
"With this new machine, we decided to elevate it away from floodwaters and we've installed new machines for the ice.
"The ice-hold in the old plant was only five tonnes but the new one will hold more ice.
"It is more viable and more efficient compared to the last one."
He said the plant would service all fishermen from the coastal areas of Sigatoka.
The new facility was commissioned by Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests Minister Inia Seruiratu.
