A 42-YEAR-OLD farmer has been jailed for eight years by the High Court in Lautoka for raping a relative in Ba Town in 2008.
According to court proceedings, the man had agreed to take the victim to town but instead raped her at an isolated bus shelter in the early hours of October 12.
The court heard the victim then ran to a nearby house, woke the house owner and pleaded for help to contact her aunt. The incident was later reported to police by relatives of the victim.
In passing sentence, Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam said the accused, under the guise of providing the victim protection, raped her on the way. He said the father of five showed total disregard for the victim's right to a peaceful life by committing the offence.
The judge ordered the accused to serve six years of his prison term before he be considered for parole.
