THE unannounced closure of the Penang Mill in Rakiraki yesterday frustrated lorry drivers who queued outside the mill for more than 12 hours.
Penang Lorry Operator's Association secretary Satish Narayan said the mill was closed since 2am.
"There were about 50 of us waiting for the mill to reopen but they did not tell us that it would be closed for so long," said Mr Narayan.
"The problem that we have is we have been waiting here since 2am and no one came out to tell us what was happening."
He said it was only when the drivers sought officials at the mill that they were given information.
"They reassured me that the mill would reopen by midday."
Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan said the mill had to close for maintenance.
"We had to change one of our mills in the early hours of this morning," said Mr Khan of the disruption.
"It took a few hours but that has been done and the mill is up and running again."
