TUI Tavua Ratu Jale Waisale Kuwe has been elected chairman of the Ba Provincial Council.
Confirming the new appointment, roko tui Ba Timoci Tukana said the Tui Tavua was appointed by the government to chair the 2013 Yasana o Ba meeting in Lautoka earlier this week.
"This is the first time that he is sitting in as chair of the meeting," said Mr Tukana.
"He was appointed by the government to lead the meeting and we welcome the new appointment.
"The new procedure now is that the government will elect the chairman of each provincial council because the provincial council is an arm of government."
At the two-day council meeting, leaders from various districts discussed issues concerning the province and the region.
The roko said one of the main discussion points was the issue of government assistance to villages in the province.
"We have been discussing mostly the assistance that government has provided us in the past few months.
"Assistance such as housing has been greatly appreciated by our leaders and we will continue to work together with the State to ensure those who were affected in last year's natural disasters are assisted."
Mr Tukana said while some schools in the province were yet to be completely restored, efforts to provide housing for villagers, including the elderly had been welcomed.
Tui Drola Ratu Epeli Vuetibau Bogileka said the two-day discussions were fruitful.
"The meeting has been really great in the sense that the leaders from the Yasana o Ba have been able to learn more about what is happening in the province," he said.
"We are also learning new things that need to be undertaken in order to bring more benefits for the province."
