VILLAGERS of Baleyaganiga in Cakaudrove raised $10,000 at its Nabukarabe Day for development purposes.
Village headman Jekope Matanamatua said the funds raised on Thursday would help achieve a major plan drawn up a few years ago.
"We had planned about three years ago to build a village hall and started fundraising.
"But the funds collected over the past two years were not enough," he said.
"So we decided to invite a relative who works in Sudan and he opened our Nabukarabe Day with $7800 and the villagers gave the rest from their soli.
"We collected $10,000 all together and that money will be used to build our village hall. We will also use the money for other village development plans."
Mr Matanamatua said the village hall would be an evacuation centre during times of natural disasters.
Chief guest Ilaitia Taga encouraged the villagers to continue with their hard work in contributing towards village development.
"In Sudan where I work, people there value livestock particularly cattle and they work hard to make sure that they own hundreds of it. If one doesn't own a cow or have a lot of cattle, they are considered poor," Mr Taga said.
"So I related that to the land and resources we have here in the village. The villagers need to value this and ensure that they make good use of the land given to us by God."
