GOVERNMENT has spent $2.8million renovating the laundry departments of the three divisional and seven sub-divisional hospitals in the country.
Minister for Health Doctor Neil Sharma revealed this while on a tour of the Labasa Hospital on Wednesday.
Dr Sharma said this included the purchase of new laundry machines for Labasa, Lautoka, Colonial War Memorial Hospital and seven other sub-divisional hospitals in the country.
"The need to renovate these departments was solely because the existing machines were old and usually breaks down a lot," he said.
"When breakdowns occur, the linen are not washed properly and this can foster infections to our patients.
"Now, the problem won't be an issue at all because these machines are of high quality. The machines are from Spain and the US."
Dr Sharma said such renovation works was part of the ministry's efforts in delivering excellent services to the public.
"The machines are now fully operational and I only hope that it will be taken good care of by laundry staff.
"This sort of initiative is part of the ministry's effort in providing the best health care for our patients and we will work towards upgrading all health facilities in the country."
