SAIRUSI Masikanace was hailed a hero for the Macuata under-13 Kaji rugby team yesterday.
Like John Eales when he kicked the winning penalty for the Wallabies during the 2000 Bledisloe Cup clash with the All Blacks, Masikanace, a lock forward for Macuata converted a field goal for a 3-0 upset victory over Tailevu at the ANZ Stadium.
The Class Seven student of Saint Mary's Primary School said it was a team effort that resulted in the win over Tailevu.
Both teams were locked nil-all when he realised the opportunity to score the three-pointer.
"I heard the referee saying that it was five minutes left on the clock and we are still having a nil-all draw," he said.
"So I decided to take the kick. It is not a surprise for me because I always practise at training."
He thanked his teammates for giving a good fight against Tailevu.
"We did not take part last year but we came here with the ambition to beat Tailevu.
"It is our first game and I believe the boys gave their best."
He said they needed to continue the fight in their remaining pool matches.
Masikanace says he wants to wear the Fiji jumper in the future.
