MISS Northern Health Services Sylvina Shivangani hopes to promote wellness through physical activities in this year's Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North in Labasa.
A physiotherapist by profession, Ms Shivangani is one of the contestants vying for the queen's crown.
"This week-long festival is one way of promoting wellness through physical activities because I believe that a lot of people are becoming obese," the 24-year-old said.
"In my line of work, it's important to tell people the right thing to do in order for them to live a healthy lifestyle.
"A lot of people who come in for physiotherapy are at their prime age and they are already facing problems physically.
"I have been inspired by my friends and family to join the contest and I want to influence people to eat a healthy diet, to exercise regularly and not to smoke."
Another reason the Valebasoga lass wants to participate in the festival is to motivate young people to always stand up for what is right and believe in themselves.
"I hope this festival will be a platform to raise my voice and speak out more on wellness, on physical activities as well as encouraging my peers to believe in what they think is right," she added.
