DON'T think of yourself as a future leader but as a young leader today.
These were the words of acting commissioner Northern Alipate Bolalevu as he addressed about 50 students at the leadership workshop in Savusavu over the weekend.
"Effectiveness in leadership is not different from effectiveness in most other human enterprises," Mr Bolalevu said.
"The same kinds of skills are required to live a productive and successful life to lead people effectively and that's why you should not wait to become a top leader before using the knowledge and the skills you learn at this workshop and in future leadership development opportunities."
Mr Bolalevu said the theme of the workshop, 'leading is not what you do, but who you are', was true.
"This is because character makes trust possible and trust makes leadership possible.
"Dr John Maxwell, who has written many books on leadership, says that whenever you lead people, it's as if they agree to go on a journey with you, the way that trip is going to turn out depends on your character.
"But if your character is flawed, the longer the trip is, the worse it gets because no one enjoys spending time with someone he or she does not trust."
