JAPANESE student Hirotaka Tanimoto took out the open male category during the Jet Runners Club Fun Run at Korovuto in Nadi yesterday.

Tanimoto won the 5 kilometre event after recording a time of 16 minutes 54 seconds.

Avikash Lal was second. He clocked 17 minutes 43 seconds.

Ravneel Kumar was third with a time of 19 minutes 20 seconds.

Shayal Kumar won the open female category. She clocked 36 minutes 12 seconds.

The fun run was organised to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Jet Runners Club president Abhinesh Kumar said more than 300 runners participated.

He said they would be partnering with the Ministry for Youth and Sports to make the event bigger next year.

"More than 150 people benefited from the free medical check-up," Abhinesh said.

"The Police Dog Unit was present along with members of the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council. The winners in each category received trophies."

"For the run we had small scale sponsorship. Next year we will get together with the Ministry for Youth and Sport. The aim is to draw runners from all over Fiji."

The sponsors for yesterday's event were SK Davey, Shop Fittings, Abhis Rentals, Sofitel, Skylodge Hotel Tata's Restaurant, Skyway Restaurant and International Embroidery.
