Action after woman dies

Maciu Malo
Tuesday, June 11, 2013

THE Ministry of Health has suspended two doctors at the Lautoka Hospital following the death of a young woman in April this year.

Noreen Sanjeshni Naidu died after an operation and family members blamed the doctors overseeing her surgery for negligence.

Health permanent secretary Dr Eloni Tora said the senior doctors were suspended based on the seriousness of the case and investigations had started.

"The suspension is based on preliminary reports of the incident at Lautoka Hospital where a young lady died after surgery," said Dr Tora.

"The ministry decided to suspend two senior officers because of the seriousness of the case and that it was possibly avoidable.

"Further investigations will be carried out and hope to conclude the actions on those responsible as soon as possible this month."

Meanwhile, Nadi and Sigatoka special administrator (SA) Aisea Tuidraki and the CEO of the Nadi Town Council, Nemia Tagi, have been terminated from office.

The announcement was made by the Attorney-General and Minister for Anti-Corruption Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday.

Citing allegations of misconduct and favouritism as reasons for the duo being asked to step down, the A-G announced that Lautoka SA Praveen Bala would assume the post of interim SA for Nadi while the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption investigated Mr Tuidraki and Mr Tagi.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also announced that businessman Jay Whyte would assume the role of Sigatoka SA for no remuneration.
