100,000 books for 22 schools

CLOSE to 100,000 books are expected to be delivered to 22 schools across Tailevu, the Yasawa Group, Central Highlands, Taveuni and remote areas on Vanua Levu.

These gifts are set to help over 3500 students in rural parts of Fiji gain access to reading material.

In a statement released by the Australian High Commission earlier this week, donator Michele Darmanin (also known as Shelly) said she hoped this would encourage better literacy in these areas.

"The project is about making a positive and lasting difference towards improving the literacy and learning capabilities of the school children of Fiji," Mrs Darmanin said.

Mrs Darmanin began this program in September last year and has since managed to secure funding assistance from the Australian High Commission's Direct Aid Program and other sponsors in Fiji, New Zealand and Australia.

"My reward is seeing the children's faces when they receive the books … to see children finding such enjoyment out of learning is the reward."

Much of her gifts to schools in remote parts of Fiji have come out of a well-established network of book publishers across the world.

Mrs Darmanin is in Fiji with her sister Kim to deliver the books personally.
