THE Land Transport Authority is focused on removing unprofessional, unethical and bad behaving drivers from the bus industry.

And the authority, in collaboration with the Fiji Bus Operators Association, launched its first series of bus drivers' recruitment on Thursday to help bus companies have access to professional, reliable and honest drivers.

Authority spokesman Iliesa Sokia said 20 drivers turned up at the LTA headquarters in Valelevu, Nasinu, where they met several bus operators.

"The initiative allows LTA to recruit, screen valid group five PSV license holders and absorb qualified drivers into a pool of around 40 to 50 drivers within LTA who will be required to help out in any bus company when the need arises," Mr Sokia said.

He said disruptions to bus services were usually because of drivers' attitudes.

"LTA is focusing its recruitment drive to government retirees or those who have had a colorful driving career in the civil service because they are well versed with government's emphasis towards improving services to the general public."
