Constitution to uphold freedom of speech

Nanise Loanakadavu
Saturday, March 23, 2013

EVERY person in Fiji has the right to freedom of expression and publication under the draft constitution.

Released on Thursday, the documents said these include the freedom to seek, receive and impart information, knowledge and ideas; freedom of the press, including print, electronic and other media; freedom of imagination and creativity; and academic freedom and freedom of scientific research.

However, under the draft, the freedom of expression and publication does not protect propaganda for war and incitement to violence or insurrection against the constitution.

A law may limit, or may authorise the limitation of, the right to freedom of expression in the interests of national security, public safety, public order and public morality."
