Crush date dilemma

CRUSHING at all four mills could be pushed back depending on the outcome of assessments carried out on sugarcane maturity.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan said continuous rainfall over the past few weeks in parts of the Western and Northern divisions and the ensuing effects, if any, on cane maturity could dictate when crushing would begin.

"We saw the effects of rainfall on cane crops in previous years when we had continuous wet weather and we certainly do not want to rush the start of crush until the cane is mature and ready," Mr Khan said.
