WOMEN of Cakaudrove crowded the Savusavu foreshore yesterday to celebrate International Women's Day with Women's Minister Doctor Jiko Luveni.

The celebrations featured unique handicraft displayed and sold by women who travelled from as far as Naweni District.

Dr Luveni encouraged the women to make good use of government's assistance through the annual budget.

"The government's budget keeps increasing every year and this year, it exceeded $1million. It depends on us women to utilise it wisely. When you develop a woman, you develop a nation," she said.

"We also need to continue our Christian beliefs as men are the head of our households, and women and men need to share family development issues."

Dr Luveni encouraged the women to continue to develop their talent to generate income for themselves and their families.

"Economically developing women is equally important.

"We also need to look after our health in order for future developments or developing yourselves. We need to review ourselves, our women's groups and note down plans or goals for your club."

While some women sold their unique art work, others sold sea food. Members of the Manavure Village Women's Group in Savusavu sold jewellery and jewellery boxes made from coconut shells.

Group member Salaceva Lainiana said they had been doing business with hotels and individuals.

"Handicraft is a good business, particularly if you have hotels in your area,"Ms Lainiana said.

"For the past six years, we have been working together as a club in doing handicraft and supplying to hotels. This business has become a good source of income for the women."
