WORLD Water Day is celebrated around the world today which gives people an opportunity to reflect on the precious water resources they have.

World Water Day will also allow people to re-look at their role in the management and protection of such resources.

The Pacific theme for this year's World Water Day is 'Building water partnership for the Pacific islands and territories'.

Secretariat of the Pacific Community director general Dr Jimmie Rodgers said co-operation was crucial not only to ensure the sustainable and equitable distribution of water but also foster and maintain peaceful relations within and among communities.

He reinforced the need to strengthen water partnerships in place across the region to help secure safe water and sanitation for all.

This year is also the International Year of Water Co-operation and the theme has enormous significance for the Pacific.
