Women with skills

WOMEN from Nadrau in Nadarivatu are known for their mat weaving skills using the rare kuta reed.

This skill has survived generations from the four villages; Nadrau, Nabawaqa, Qalinasavu and Vanua Levu, that make up the district of Nadrau.

One such organisation that strives to keep the age old craft is the Qalinasavu Women's Club.

Club president Naomi Sabaru said keeping the skill alive was an important aspect of the club.

"We have young women in the club and teaching them how to weave mats with kuta is an advantage as they will adopt the skill and also earn money," she said.
