PLANS are in progress to develop the south end of the Garden Island of Taveuni into a major tourism centre.

Speaking at the opening of the South Taveuni Secondary School in Navaca, Waimaqera Land Purchase Co-operation Association secretary Abhai Kannaiya said they discussed the plans with a government team that recently visited the island.

Mr Kannaiya said the association had bought 1500 acres of land from a European planter who had previously lived in the area.

"We will be setting aside 160 acres of land wholly for the project," he said. "This is a very good project that will provide employment for the people in this area, especially the youths."
