Dad guilty of raping daughter

A MAN will be sentenced today at the High Court in Suva for raping his daughter, who is a cancer patient.

Delivering their verdict, the three assessors unanimously found him guilty of two counts of indecent assault and five counts of rape.

On the sentencing submission, state prosecutor, Madonna Fong submitted 16 to 18 years imprisonment with non-parole period of 15 to 16 years.

However, the man sought the forgiveness of the court, the church, his family and his in-laws and asked for a lenient period of 10 years imprisonment.

He had asked for his wife, who was also present in court, to find a place in her heart to forgive him.

Ms Fong asked the court to consider the man had breached parental trust, the length of time the victim was victimised from the age of 8 to 14, the physical and mental abuse the victim suffered, impregnated his daughter and he had torn the family apart.

She told the court to also consider the seriousness and the gravity of the offence.

The court heard the victim is his eldest daughter.

The court also heard that the man is married with three kids and unemployed.

It heard the multiple rapes took place at their home from January 2008 to December 2011.

Further, the court heard the man was always strict with his daughter and used to beat her several times.

The court heard the victim did not tell anyone because she was threatened by her father that he would beat her up.

Judge Justice Salesi Temo will deliver his sentence today.
