FORMER professional golfer Abid Hussain will be the player to look out for during the Fiji Amateur Championship at the Fiji Golf Club in Suva this weekend.
The Nadi Airport Golf Club member has been in top form recently having won the last national trials and finished strongly in the 2013 Summer Cup at the NGGC — winning round five and six competitions.
Fiji's top amateur Olaf Allen Jr will be looking to win his first-ever National Amateur Championship title.
Airports Fiji Limited fireman Anuresh Chandra is among the top seeds for National Golf Association of Fiji's premier event. Anuresh won the amateur title during the Fiji Open last year.
NGAF secretary Amitesh Chandra said this weekend's tournament, which is sponsored by Cleveland Srixon, would serve as the fourth trials to select the Fiji team for the Nomura Cup.
Amitesh said the teams event would also be played.
"The favourite for the stroke play event is home boy Olaf Allen Jr but he will face stiff competition from former professional Abid Hussain who has won a couple of tournaments lately.
"In the teams event, defending champions Suva will be hard to beat on their home turf. Teams from Nadi, Ba and Lautoka will pose a challenge for them."
Abid, Amitesh, Anuresh and Ritesh Chandra are expected to spearhead Nadi's campaign. Roneel Prakash will lead Lautoka's charge while veteran Rajen Singh will guide the Ba team with Rohit, the brother of former Fiji amateur number one Vikrant Chandra.
