A 26-YEAR-old driver of a truck that allegedly hit a six-year-old girl in Lautoka on Monday has been granted bail.
Appearing in the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday, Shelvin Silaan Kumar was charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning death and one of failure to stop after an accident. The charges are related to the death of Vasemaca Doris.
Mr Kumar allegedly fled but later surrendered himself to police. The court heard he was driving a truck along Sukanaivalu Rd when the victim ran onto the road.
Police prosecutor Constable Mohammed Shamim Hasan said the victim was standing on the right side of the road with her father before she ran into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
In his first appearance before Magistrate Peni Dalituicama, Mr Kumar surrendered all of his travel documents before presenting the court with two sureties.
The court ordered that Kumar pay $1500 for his bail and report to the Lautoka Police Station every Saturday before his next appearance.
The matter has been adjourned to April 2.
