THE Lautoka City Council will seek harsher penalties for litterbugs, says special administrator Praveen Bala who yesterday expressed concern that irresponsible residents continued to use waterways as a dumping ground.
Yesterday council workers inspected Musuniwai Creek which runs along one of the main roads leading into Lautoka, and Mr Bala said he was disappointed with what he saw.
"It is not only unsightly, I am concerned that there are clutters of rubbish near the residences that line the creek," he said.
"If people claim they are not responsible for the rubbish that is scattered in their backyard, then at least residents should have some pride to keep their home and surroundings clean, and also maintain and promote the reputation of the city."
"We have done our part with the awareness programs.
"Now the rangers will be going out and those dumping rubbish will be fined."
