A TOTAL of 970 children from poor backgrounds were assisted by the Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC) last year.

According to FENC Fiji program co-ordinator Mere Tikoduadua-Fonua, the foundation helped the children with school fees and met each child's education needs.

Ms Fonua said this year, the foundation already received a lot of application from parents and communities seeking assistance for needy children.

"We have quite a few applications already," said Ms Fonua.

FENC Fiji west program officer, Kriti Karti said its Nadi office received more than 200 applications in the Western Division alone. Ms Karti said many of the children were from very poor backgrounds and whose parents were not able to put their child through school.
