A 29-YEAR-old man was sentenced to four years in jail for manslaughter and assault causing actual bodily harm.
James Ashwin Raj was sentenced to four years imprisonment for manslaughter and six months imprisonment for assault.
But the High Court in Labasa ordered that the six months sentence be served concurrenly.
Judge Justice Daniel Goundar said he had fixed a non-parole period of three years.
On June 28, last year, Raj killed Ilisoni Logaivau in Labasa.
Also, he unlawfully assaulted Asenaca Davai.
The court heard Raj had an altercation with Logaivau at Fusion Night Club in Labasa Town in the early hours of the mentioned date. Ms Davai and Logaivau were in a de-facto relationship.
When the couple left the nightclub and was walking towards their home, Raj approached them and punched Logaivau on the back of his head.
Logaivau fell on the pavement as a result of the punch. When Ms Davai tried to pick Logaivau, Raj kicked her on the right jaw and punched her left eye.
After assaulting her, Raj turned to Logaivau and further punched and kicked him while he lay motionless on the ground.
Logaivau was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead after attempts to resuscitate him failed.
The court heard that Raj can appeal against the sentence in the Court of Appeal within 30 days.
