CANDIDATE master Calvin Prasad is tipped to successfully defend the Brijlal Open Chess Championship title this weekend.

The tournament which will be held this Sunday at the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee's Olympic House, has many prizes in various categories sponsored by Brijlal.

Fiji Chess Federation assistant general secretary Teliko Koroi said Prasad was the favourite in the event. "Last year, when Calvin Prasad won this tournament, he had extended his winning streak to an exceptional 30 wins in a row," she said.

"Beyond doubt, he will be a favorite to dominate the arena again."

Prasad's long-time rival, CM Manoj Kumar would be the best challenger for him in the event.

"In the senior division, in-form CM Manoj Kumar has been practising very hard to challenge CM Calvin," Koroi said.

Kumar, the winner of the 2012 Grand Prix table said points in every tournament counted towards the grand prix and was critical in every tournament.

"These points work like a league system where we get 20 points for winning a tournament, and at the end of the year, the overall winner has good chances to be considered to represent Fiji in international tournaments."
