THE Nabouwalu road in Bua has opened to light traffic only.

Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Neil Cook confirmed that the Nabouwalu road was now accessible.

Black Top operations manager Fiji Stu Haynes said they had opened one lane of the boggy road.

"We opened one section last night (Saturday) to light traffic only while work progresses on the other lane. That will be completed soon and the road will be fully accessible by Monday night (tonight)," Mr Haynes said.

The road closed last week following landslides caused by the adverse weather condition.

Workers of FRA cleared debris on the road from slips and repaired washouts to allow vehicles to pass through.

Mr Cook said last week that the closure of the road underpinned the importance of upgrading the Nabouwalu-Dreketi road.

The $200million upgrading work of that road wil begin soon.

It would be the largest single project on FRA's program for the next few years.

Mr Cook also said roads in poor condition would deteriorate under extended heavy rain because of neglect over the years.

He said the FRA's program of maintenance and large scale reconstruction would improve the network's condition which would result in much fewer potholes appearing after heavy rain.
