THE Women in Sports Commission celebrated International Women's Day in a different manner yesterday.
Led by chairperson Susie Yee, the commission visited the Fiji National Council for the Disabled in Suva. Yee said they wanted to celebrate the event in a different way.
"We had about 50 women who attended the event," she said.
"We were very pleased with the outcome, most of them were part of this celebration for the first time and we are happy to bring this event to their comfort zone."
Yee said the aim was to involve more women in different sports. She said most women had shown interest in playing different sports.
"Some women have expressed their interest to play sports like golf, chess, beach volleyball and swimming. This is good, so what the commission will do is contact the different sporting federations and tell them the interest of these women," she said. "Our main aim is to involve a lot of women in sports and we will continue to work on that in future."
Outgoing Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee president Vidhya Lakhan was the chief guest at the event.
