SUVA businessman Olaf Allen Jr is the top seed for the Fiji Amateur Championship that will be played at the Fiji Golf Club next week.

Allen Jr has never won the Fiji Amateur Championship title. He will face stiff competition from fellow national squad members Anuresh Chandra, Roneel Prakash, Munesh Prasad, junior champion Baarroon Hussain and former professional Abid Hussain.

A new winner will be crowned in the event after Vikrant Chandra, who held the title for the past four years, has turned professional.

National Golf Association of Fiji secretary Amitesh Chandra said the National Amateur Championship was rated as the blue ribbon event for the parent body.

He said the tournament would be played over 54 holes in two days.

"The Fiji Amateur Championship is a world ranking event," Amitesh said.

"Olaf is the favourite. He will be playing on his home course so it will be difficult to beat him.

"Olaf has won all the other major titles but the Fiji Amateur Championship title. He has been playing good golf recently so this could be his year."

The top 16 players from the tournament will qualify for the Fiji Amateur Match Play Championship that will be held at the Nadi Airport Golf Club from March 29-30.

Allen Jr remains on 679th position in the latest world amateur golf rankings. Anuresh is on 2283, Ronnel is ranked 2838, Munesh is on 5313, Amitesh is ranked 5348 while Baarroon has a ranking of 5504.

Meanwhile, there will be no competition at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club in Nadi this weekend.

All the members are urged to support the Nadi Airport Season Opening sponsored by ANZ on Saturday.
