THE brutal beating of two men in a video footage now being shown on a number of websites has been labelled by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key as "very alarming".

Mr Key was quoted as saying on TVNZ that the New Zealand government took it seriously and expected the Fijian authorities to deal with them appropriately. Mr Key said those people who had undertaken the beating to be held accountable.

"It's the sort of thing we worry an awful lot about," Mr Key said.

The Fiji Police Force has already started a thorough investigation in relation to the brutal beating.

Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, during a press conference on Tuesday, said the force was disturbed to see the video that had emerged of what appears to be the abuse of two men understood to be recaptured prisoners.

Insp Sokomuri said a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances has been ordered.

"We want to stress from the outset that no-one should prejudice this investigation by speculating on what happened. We need to formally establish the precise facts and we are determined to do so," he said.

The footage showed a group of men stomping on the pair and beating them with batons and pipes.
