INMATES from the Ba Corrections Centre assisted the Rakiraki Town Council in clearing tree trunks and debris from the Nakauvadra River as part of flood mitigation works being carried out in the sugar-producing centre.
Rakiraki interim special administrator Seini Raiko-Vunivutu lauded the centre's swift response to the council's request for assistance.
"The debris in the river was a cause for serious concern, especially with the amount of rainfall we experienced over the past two weeks," she said.
"In the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Evan, we made an urgent plea to the Corrections Centre and on behalf of the people living in Rakiraki.
"I would like to thank officer-in-charge Jone Biu for responding speedily," she said.
