ABOUT 150 workers have been sent home from sawmills in the Northern Division as a result of the weather conditions.

The Labasa Waiqele Sawmill sent home 186 workers last week while the Dalomo Sawmill also sent home a group.

Waiqele Sawmill logging manager Feroz Begg said they had to lay off 186 workers.

"We fear losing workers as a result of the prolonged wet weather," said Mr Begg.

"We are currently giving them standby wages in a bid to keep them with us because many of them do tend to look for greener pastures in Viti Levu," he said.

Mr Begg said the wet weather always presenteda slack period for the logging industry.

Dalomo Sawmill owner Mohammed Shamshood said mill operations have been stopped.

"We will resume normal operations as soon as the weather improves," he said.

Heavy rain continued in the Northern Division yesterday with flooding in parts of Labasa Town.
