Council prepares for worse

Maciu Malo
Tuesday, March 05, 2013

THE Nadi Town Council is bracing for flooding as the weather office forecasted heavy showers last night and the remainder of the week.

Council CEO Nemia Tagi said residents were preparing for the possibility of flooding and the council had taken taken preventative measures.

"We have learnt a lot of lessons from the last two floods and we are prepared this time around," said Mr Tagi.

"We have cleaned up all the drains in town and nearby areas since drain blockage was a major cause of flooding last year.

"But the risk remains as some drains will only hold their capacity during heavy rain."

Mr Tagi said while there was no major flooding in the town area, residents should remain alert.

Meanwhile, Sigatoka Town Council chief CEO Anand Sami Pillay said the drainage system in the town had improved compared to previous years, and so far there had been no report of flooding.
