FORMER professional Abid Hussain displayed his class upon his return to amateur status by taking out the third national trials at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club in Nadi on Saturday.

Husain showed the experience gained on the professional tour carding two over par 146 in the 36-hole event.

He scored 73 in the first round and return with the same score in the second round.

Abid finished two strokes ahead of Fiji's number one amateur player Olaf Allen Jr who carded 73 in the first round and 75 in the second round.

Airports Fiji Limited fireman Anuresh Chandra was placed third with total of 151 scoring 75 and 76. National Golf Association of Fiji secretary Amitesh Chandra was fourth with 153 scoring 79 and 74.

The last nine holes were played under heavy rain.

The trials are being held to select the Fiji team for the 2013 Nomura Cup.

Despite finishing second in the third trials Allen Jr maintains the top spot in the national rankings.

The Suva businessman has 64 points and is followed by Amitesh on 56 points, Anuresh on 50 points and Roneel Prakash on 38 points.

Amitesh said the road to the Nomura Cup was getting tougher.

He said there wasn't much separating the first three players.

"With the Fiji Amateur Championship around the corner, there is a lot at stake," Amitesh said.

"The training squad number will be reduced to 12 players after this tournament. Only four players will be chosen in the Fiji team so every trial is important."

The Nomura Cup will be held at the Santiburi Country

Club in Chang Rai, Thailand in November.

Meanwhile, Allen Jr remains on 679th position in the latest world amateur rankings.
