A TOTAL of 25 vehicles operating illegally as public transport vehicles were seized by the Land Transport Authority over the weekend.

Continuing with the second phase of Operation Rainbow in the Western Division, the LTA came down hard on private vehicle owners who operated illegal public vehicles.

LTA West team leader Joji Suguturaga said apart from the 25 illegal vehicles, three private rentals were also seized by LTA officers on Saturday.

"We have seized the vehicles and on Monday (today) they will face the tribunal lead by the chief executive," he said.

Mr Suguturaga said illegal vehicles seized by the officers could prompt their owners to lose their licence as a consequence. Meanwhile, a popular hangout for illegal operators in Lautoka has been called out by Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki.

Cdr Cawaki said a good number of illegal operators were located on Tavewa Avenue.

"This is a place where a number of illegal operators are operating and affecting the taxi business," he said.
