A MEMORANDUM of understanding between the Housing Ministry and NGOs will lay a platform for the provision of shelter in the country's informal housing sector.
Housing Minister Colonel Samuela Saumatua told the launch of shelter cluster activities for Tropical Cyclone Evan and post-disaster assessment workshop in Suva yesterday: "Tropical Cyclone Evan showed our resilience in some areas but it also highlighted our vulnerability."
"Following Cyclone Evan the government machinery moved into action with relevant stakeholders to start the process of recovery and preparing the nation for future cyclones."
Col. Saumatua said various stakeholders including the institute of engineers met to discuss the problems.
"Government then decided to form clusters to meet the various areas that need addressing," he said, adding eight clusters have been formed under the humanitarian action policy endorsed by Cabinet last December."
