THE Fiji Roads Authority has outlined that a temporary structure will be built at the existing Vatuwaqa Bridge.
This was confirmed by authority chief executive officer Neil Cook yesterday who said that the structure would be set up around May or June.
Mr Cook said they were working on a design function of the new bridge.
"The temporary structure or deck will be restricted to one lane traffic only.
"Traffic signals will also be placed at each end of the structure to ease traffic flow," said Mr Cook.
He said they were making the new bridge a priority given the inconvenience on other roads where traffic had been re-routed.
He highlighted that there was no time frame for the reopening of the Stinson Parade bridge because there was no simple temporary solution.
Mr Cook said bridges and jetties were a major problem in Fiji.
"They have not been maintained and the condition of the bridges and jetties are deteriorating prematurely," he said.
Mr Cook said of the $420million allocated by the government in the 2013 budget for road upgrades, $5m has been set aside for operations, $35m for maintenance, $90m for renewals and $290m for major projects.
