A total of $25,000 will be up for grabs at the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s which starts at Prince Charles Park this morning.
The Nawaka 7s tournament is tagged by Paradise Beverages marketing manager Joe Rodan as the most prestigious tournament in the Western Division with the development of rugby 7s at the grassroots level being the main aim.
Rodan said the Nadi tourney was on par with the annual Marist 7s.
According to him, the development of rugby at the grassroots level was limited in the country and their involvement over the years was to improve on this.
Paradise Beverages sponsors more than a dozen rugby 7s tournaments around the country each year.
Rodan also commended the media's role in enlarging the profile of the tournaments played in the country.
"The media plays a very important part in promoting the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s," Rodan said.
"It is through the media that the awareness is created. Our company's policy is to promote grassroots level rugby.
"We have been doing it for the past 37 years. If you look around, promotion towards grassroots level rugby is very scarce. We believe that through grassroots level rugby that we will identify a lot of potential players who will make it to the Fiji team." Rodan said their sponsorship was a way of giving back to sevens rugby, referred to by international commentators as Fiji's national sport.
