7s puzzle

DIGICEL Fiji sevens head coach Alifereti Dere is searching for the right player to complete the puzzle of replacing star playmaker Joji Ragamate.

The former national sevens skipper has three players in mind to replace Ragamate who is unavailable for the HSBC Sevens World Series tournaments in Hong Kong and Japan.

Wardens star Ilai Tinai, Samisoni Viriviri and Nadroga halfback Sakiusa Gavidi are the top candidates to fill the big shoes vacated by Ragamate.

Dere said he had a specialised halfback in mind to replace Ragamate.

"I have got a specialised halfback (Gavidi) in the squad. And also I have Tinai and Viriviri there who can also play at halfback," he said.

Ragamate was a successful replacement for Nikola Matawalu after he left to join the Glasgow Warriors last season. Matawalu fitted in well following Emosi Vucago's departure to join Waisale Serevi in Seattle, United States.

"If we look at it, Ragamate was a specialised halfback after Matawalu. And Matawalu replaced Vucago when he left, so now the onus will be another specialised player in that position. That was the trend if we look at it carefully," Dere said.

Meanwhile, the national side trained at the Pure Fiji Zenergy Group Fitness complex in Vatuwaqa, Suva yesterday.

"We always have our yoga session here and we are thankful to Pure Fiji for accommodating us," Dere said.

Pure Fiji director Gaetane Austin said they were proud to host the national team.

"We are all supporters of our national team and this is a great opportunity for us to host them. They asked to come and train here so we did not hesitate to welcome them. This is one way where we show our support to the national team," Austin said.
