A TOTAL of 14 Fijians have been taking refuge in New Zealand since July last year.

This was confirmed by Immigration New Zealand yesterday.

However, the senior communications adviser for New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Angie Enoka, said the number of Fijians seeking refugee status had decreased compared to 34 in July 2011 to June 2012 and 50 in July 2010 to June 2011.

Ms Enoka said those Fijians recognised as refugees in New Zealand would remain in the country either on a temporary visa or a resident visa.
