$25m allocation for road maintenance

ABOUT $25million has been set aside by the Fiji Roads Authority for further general road maintenance work up north.

FRA chief executive Neil Cook said most of the funding would be used on rural roads.

"For instance, we have programmed significant pavement and drainage works on Cawaro Rd for which the residents inform me they have been waiting for 25 years," he said. "In addition, there is renewal work for sealed roads that will see nearly 10kilometres of existing sealed road reconstructed and a further 18km of sealed road resealed."

Mr Cook said about $1.8m would also be used to fix roads in rural areas including farm roads.

He said the objectives and goals of the authority, ministries of Provincial Development and Agriculture were clearly aligned.

The $1.8m will cover roads works at Koroinasolo Rd (Bua), Nakoso Rd (Cakaudrove), Lagi — Nukusere (Macuata), Namuavoivoi Road (Bua), Taveuni (farm access roads) and the Sevaci — Korotasere (Cakaudrove).

Mr Cook was part of a government team that toured the north last week.

"The Minister for Agriculture gave us a valuable insight into the strategies for economic and social development in the north, which gives me a much better understanding of how the proposed road upgrade projects fit with overall government objectives.

"We also spent time with the Commissioner Northern and received a comprehensive briefing from his staff on the big picture as far as desirable road links and access provision for getting goods to market, children to school, access for health services."
