Early morning furore

AN early morning fire yesterday caused a stir at one of Lautoka's prominent primary schools as students were rushed to safety.

Lautoka Methodist Primary School students had to be escorted to safety after a fire broke out in a storeroom.

National Fire Authority chief executive officer John O'Connor said the fire started around 7am.

"Fortunately only a few students were around at that time and through the quick action of the teachers, they were gathered at the school grounds while our officers worked on putting out the fire," he said.

Mr O'Connor said an investigation had been launched into the cause of the fire.

"Right now, our investigations are still continuing.

"We know that the fire started in the basement in the caretaker's room but to determine the cause of the fire, it will take some time."

He said no further damage was sustained.
