Rape case moves to High Court

A 33-year-old security guard appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday charged with one count of rape.

He appeared before Magistrate Alipate Mataitini but no plea was taken.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Narsa Reddy objected to bail citing the seriousness of the case.

Mr Mataitini however, transferred the case to the High Court because rape was an indictable offence.

It is alleged the accused raped a 27-year-old cleaner on October 28 last year.

Police arrested the accused on Tuesday and produced him in court yesterday after laying charges.

Mr Mataitini ordered the accused to apply for bail when the case will be called in the High Court next week.

The case has been transferred to the Suva High Court on February 27.
