Road on repair list

THE Vatukoula Rd leading from Tavua Town to the goldmining centre is on a list of potential sites for urgent rehabilitation this year.

This was confirmed by Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Neil Cook.

He said it was important to note that a majority of the country's roads had been neglected for years and that the authority was taking steps to address the issue.

"We are currently finalising the 2013 program for rehabilitation works," Mr Cook said.

"Vatukoula Rd is on the list of potential sites for 2013 which means it will be prioritised against many other roads that are also in need of rehabilitation.

"If, following the evaluation process, Vatukoula Rd does not make the priority listing for full rehabilitation this year, then the existing ripped sections will be programmed for sealing (rip and remake) under the normal maintenance programme by Higgins Contractors.

"In this way we will look to halt further pavement deterioration until such time as the road can be rebuilt."

Mr Cook said as an interim measure, the well-travelled thoroughfare and only link for goldmine workers and farming community in the surrounding areas, would be regularly maintained.
