Brothers lead the way in Navua

COMBINE Brothers, featuring six Navua reps including the four Chand brothers, and League, led by veteran Seveci Rokotakala, look top bets for the John's Electrical-sponsored Navua Football Association pre-season tournament.

Brothers Monit, Rajneel and Vineet shared five goals between them while midfielder Parneel Chand scored a brace as the Rovadrau, Nakaulevu, team hammered LICI Tokotoko 7-0 on Sunday in the opening weekend of the competition. On Saturday, Combined won 2-0 over plucky Jolly Brothers featuring several youngsters.

League, also laced with district reps Inia Boko, Sheik Moshin, Rokotakala, Apisai Smith, Inoke O'Conner, Simione Damuni, Netani Doli, Sakenasa Qali and former reps Ismail Shaheem and Nasir Hussein, won 2-0 over the Joseph Elder-led Jolly on Sunday but were held 0-0 by an impressive Waidova Sanatan on Saturday.

O'Conner and Damuni were sent-off in that game. League and Combined are in pool one. After round-robin matches the top two teams from each pool will meet in the semi-finals. Vakabalea, captained by Rajnesh Sharma, leads pool two with four points and a better goal difference.

NFA secretary Ashwin Chand said there was huge interest in the club games.

"This knockout will run for three weeks and features twelve teams," MH Navua employee Chand said.

"The interest in club soccer is returning as this had died out in past years. The competition is stiff and spectator attendance is very encouraging, the future for Navua football looks bright." Competition continues this weekend.
