FIJI sevens winger Benito Masilevu touched down a late try to help his Lomaiviti Barbarians to a 19-17 victory over Red Rock One during the MH Red Rock 7s tournament at Albert Park yesterday.
Lomaiviti was trailing by seven points when Masilevu propelled his way past the Red Rock defenders to score under the crossbar, handing Lomaiviti the winning try to scoop the $1500 prizemoney.
National sevens rover Manasa Nayagi was at his best for his club, playing well with his teammates to create scoring opportunities.
Lomaiviti beat Red Rock Two in the semi-final 12-10 while Red Rock One edged BSP Life Wardens 12-7 in the other semi-final.
Red Rock advanced into the final after scoring a try at extra-time.
Red Rock coach and national sevens selector Lote Rasiga said they organised the event to prepare his boys for upcoming local tournaments.
"We are happy with the way things turned out, despite the fact that we lost in the final," he said.
"This tournament is just a build-up to the Nawaka 7s and also to other local tournaments which we will be part of this season."
Twenty-two teams registered for the event which was organised by the Red Rock club. Teams from Wainibuka were part of the event.
Rasiga thanked MH for sponsoring the tournament. Rasiga added a similar tournament will be held at Albert Park next Saturday.
