FORMER rugby prop Tiko Matawalu is the new Nadroga Rugby Union president.
Matawalu was unanimously appointed after Ratu Isikeli Tasere decided to step down from the post and concentrate as the Fiji Rugby Union president during the NRU's annual general meeting at Talenavuruvuru in Sigatoka yesterday.
The man from Tubou, Lakeba in Lau, at first kindly declined and asked all club delegates that the position of the union's president should be given to someone within the province of Nadroga that has chiefly connections to the province.
But Sanaila Nadredre from the Sigatoka Rugby Club reaffirmed Matawalu that all 55 clubs affiliated to the union have made their decision and he should not back down from it.
Sakiusa Lalabalavu from the Cuvu Rugby Club reassured Matawalu that the chiefly house of Nakuruvarua and the rugby public of Nadroga will support him throughout the season.
"We consider you as a true kai Nadroga and we we will back you," Lalabalavu said.
"I am humbled to be elected to this new post.' said Matawalu.
He thanked all club delegates, the vanua and chiefs for their faith in him.
"I would also like to thank the Tui Madudu for a great job done for the last five years and I hope to continue where he left off."
He asked the Nadroga rugby public for their support during the upcoming ruby season.
